Ames Osram (AMS), the world's leading optical solutions provider, has announced the launch of EEL (75W edge emitting laser) PL90AT03 in a cost-effective plastic package, ideal for cost-effective consumer electronics and industrial applications, according to Myms Consulting. The high performance infrared laser has a peak output power and an aperture of only 110µm, providing excellent performance in remote ranging applications while allowing for easy optical integration.

The new SPL PL90AT03 is packaged in economical plastic, making it the ideal EEL for high volume applications

The new SPL PL90AT03 is packaged in economical plastic, making it the ideal EEL for high volume applications. Thanks to state-of-the-art chip technology, the SPL PL90AT03 is upgraded to higher efficiency based on the same size as the previous generation of SPL PL90 series laser diodes. In addition, the SPL PL90AT03 has a narrower transmitting width and a 50% smaller aperture than its predecessor, making it easier to design optics.

The single-channel SPL PL90AT03 uses Imis Osram's multi-junction technology. A single naked laser consists of three vertically stacked emitters, encapsulated in a radial plastic package. This technique enables the laser to produce an optical peak output power of 75W with a 30ns pulse at a maximum forward current of 25A. The laser diode can produce short laser pulses ranging from a few ns to 100ns.

The SPL PL90AT03's narrow transmission area and high optical power output make it ideal for remote ranging applications such as robotics, drones, home and factory/industrial automation. In time-of-flight (ToF) sensing and lidar applications, the high-performance SPL PL90AT03 generates more precise and accurate depth maps for 3D optical sensing and real-time localization and mapping (SLAM) systems.

SPL PL90AT03 is suitable for 3D sensing applications such as robotics, factory/industrial automation, drones, rangefinders, smart cities, intelligent logistics, etc

Jouni Riihimaeki, Product Marketing manager for Imas Osram Industrial Lasers, said, "Our expanding portfolio of high-performance, edgewise infrared lasers offers a new option for our customers who require economical packaging. Compared to other edge-emitting lasers in the series, the SPL PL90AT03 has a small aperture and high output power, while being packaged in a radial plastic package suitable for high-volume applications."

Excellent optical properties

The peak wavelength of the pulsed laser SPL PL90AT03 is 905nm and the spectral bandwidth (FWHM) is 5nm. The beam divergence Angle is only 12° (parallel) ×25° (vertical), and the small aperture of 110µm achieves effective beam shaping.
