On May 26, 2023, the inventor of ALPD laser technology, Light Peak Technology, said at the performance presentation: "ALPD®5.0 laser display technology creates higher brightness, more comfortable viewing experience, better color accuracy through the way of light source control and matching software algorithms, which can achieve the maximum color gamut visible to the human eye."

"The company is working on the productization of the ALPD®5.0 laser display technology and will reach mass production and market as soon as possible. Laser TV category is still in the early stage of development, consumer awareness still needs to be further improved, the company will continue to release good products to the market."

Simply put: Light peak technology is working on the productization of ALPD®5.0 laser display technology, which will reach mass production as soon as possible, that is, in the second half of 2023,ALPD5.0 laser light source will enter the projection market, which can reach the maximum color gamut visible to the human eye on the basis of no-speck, low-cost, efficient and compact, and launch Pro and Lite two technologies Platform,C end application optical machine will be available in 2023 at the earliest.

What is ALPD laser?

ALPD, that is, laser display technology, that is, a technical route based on laser excitation of rare earth materials and mixed multicolor laser for image display. It is a clever optical framework based on optical extension Etendue proposed by Optical Peak Technology in 2007, which can not only retain the high brightness of the laser, but also overcome the speckle defects of the traditional laser display technology, and through continuous evolution and evolution, the laser as a light source applied to the display or virtual display process.

1. Overcome the cost of laser display Rec.2020 color gamut

2, the traditional RGB three-color laser speckle problem

According to reports, the human eye's perception of image indicators such as resolution and color is sensitive enough, but also extremely demanding, so the pursuit of display product color has never stopped.

In the display industry's common color gamut standards, there are three layers of ladder:

The first layer: Rec.709, which is suitable for most displays, represents the standard color gamut in our general understanding;

The second layer :DCI-P3, that is, Hollywood color gamut, is the color gamut applied to digital film technology, the higher the value means that the more accurate the true color required for the film picture;

The third layer :Rec.2020, proposed for ultra high-definition TV, covers image parameters such as resolution, frame rate, bit depth and color gamut definition, which helps to restore the real world through the three primary color system, and is considered to be the color gamut standard for 4K digital displays.

In the past, laser display products that have reached the Rec.2020 color gamut have high cost and high power consumption problems, which are difficult to popularize and promote to ordinary consumers, and also let consumers miss the opportunity to experience the complete color performance of laser display, while the traditional RGB three-color laser has a speckle problem that is difficult to solve, further affecting the terminal experience.

ALPD®5.0 laser display technology through the light source control matching software algorithm, while maintaining the original technical advantages of non-speckle-free, low-cost ALPD®, greatly improved the color gamut range, up to 120% REC.202,165% DCI-P3,210% Rec.709, meets the requirements of the color gamut in the 4K standard, and can achieve the maximum color gamut visible to the human eye.

It is expected that the optical machine products widely used in the C end will be available in the second half of this year. It is reported that by then, Danbei Projection will debut products equipped with ALPD®5.0, bringing more product power projectors to the highly competitive projection market.

Third, expand the history of ALPD® laser development

ALPD1.0: First in 2007, patented in 2011, the use of blue + transmitted fluorescence, to achieve a breakthrough from 0 to 1.

ALPD®2.0: Launched in 2012, the fluorescence scheme has been developed from a transmission optical wheel to a reflective optical wheel, which is divided into two layers: the inner layer of fluorescence and the outer layer of light filtering; Blue light excites yellow light, and green light and red light are separated through the filter, which improves the fluorescence utilization rate to reduce light loss, and improves the overall energy efficiency and color gamut coverage. The significance in engineering is outstanding, and the explosive laser projection such as Dangbei X3 is the application of ALPD2.0.

ALPD®3.0: Significantly improved fluorescence utilization, launched in 2015. ALPD 3.0 allows DLP display to have better color accuracy and gamut coverage by improving the red ratio, solving the color problem criticized by 1DLP. While maintaining high brightness,CLO color light output reaches 100% and color light output reaches 100% white light, achieving the same effect as 3DLP and 3LCD.

ALPD®4.0: Launched in 2018,Rec.2020 color gamut coverage reaches 98.5%, fluorescence utilization in DCI P3 color gamut increases from 58% to 87% of 2.0, and overall energy efficiency increases from 8.5lm/W of 2.0 to 12.4lm/W.

ALPD®5.0: It is believed that in the future, ALPD5.0 will be applied to the whole scene of home and business with unique advantages such as no speckle, high color gamut, high viewing comfort, and high cost performance, and become the mainstream of the next generation display technology.
