The global leader in the field of laser technology, Coherent Company, announced today that Dr. Young Kai (YK) Chen has been appointed as Vice President, Coherent Company Technology Officer (DCTO), reporting to CTO Dr. Julie Sheridan Eng.
Dr. Vincent D. Mattera said: "The appointment of Dr. YK Chen as Deputy Chief Technology Officer has made full use of his rich experience as an outstanding scientist and his broad vision of technology opportunities during his work at Bell Labs and DARPA." "As a DCTO, Dr. Chen will work closely with Dr. Eng to plan the future technology direction of our company, including the creation of new materials for energy generation, transmission and storage, basic research around the next generation Quantum technology, the required breakthrough in the sixth generation wireless network, and the use of digital technology, machine learning and artificial intelligence in our operations, products and services."
Before being appointed as DCTO, Dr. Chen was the chief scientist of the start-up and broadband gap electronics technology group of the relevant company. Before joining related companies in 2021, he served as a project manager for DARPA, responsible for initiating and managing projects in advanced semiconductor electronics, secure communication, as well as artificial intelligence and machine learning processing. Dr. Chen previously served as the senior director of Nokia Bell Labs, responsible for advanced research and technology development in high-speed electronics and optoelectronics, including integrated lasers, silicon Photonics, coherent optical data links and wireless backhaul transceivers.
Dr. Chen obtained a doctoral degree. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University. He is academician of Bell Labs, IEEE and Optica (OSA); Academician of the National Academy of Engineering; And won the famous IEEE David Sarnoff Award and Edison Patent Award. He has authored or co authored three book chapters and over 190 journal articles, and holds 33 US patents.
