Albasense, a start-up company operating independently from the University of Western Scotland (UWS), is expected to overturn the global photon imaging and sensor industry. Albasense originated from the Institute of Thin Films, Sensors and Imaging (ITFSI) of UWS and is the third start-up company independent from the university. The company will use the exclusive patented process to develop low-cost, high-performance thin film optical coatings and photon sensors.
Thin film is a material with thickness ranging from several nanometers to several microns. It has become a key component in a wide range of applications, including medical devices such as autonomous photonic gas sensors, respiratory analyzers, non-contact thermometers, and advanced imaging systems. Albasense will obtain the core intellectual property (IP) including three patents that are exclusively licensed globally from UWS.
Founder of Albusense Professor Des Gibson, pioneer of thin film deposition and photon sensor technology, said: "Albasense is the crystallization of world-class research and expertise. The company combines past industry experience and aims at the basic market demand for low-cost film and sensor technology. Our goal is to provide photon imaging and sensing solutions for a series of applications that require miniaturization, mass production and low-cost measurement, such as medical diagnosis, agricultural technology, environmental monitoring and industrial process monitoring."
