On November 1, the next generation of 3D Silicon ™ Enovix, the design and manufacturer of lithium-ion battery, announced that its laser project has made two key progress recently.

First, Enovix announced that it had signed a non binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the American high-power fiber laser giant IPG Photonics. The two sides will cooperate to develop cutting-edge, next-generation laser tools and methods to optimize the battery manufacturing process and productivity.

Secondly, Manuel Leonardo, an expert in laser photonics, was appointed as a senior laser engineer.
Enovix said that the recent two developments of the company will further promote its development of improving production efficiency and product performance, and make future product development possible.

(1) Cooperate with IPG to develop the next generation of efficient production laser tools
Ashok Lahiri, co-founder and CTO of Enovix, said: "From 30W laser in 2018 to 1kW laser today, our manufacturing process has been greatly improved, and the latest 1kW laser will be incorporated into the Gen2 system."

Our process largely depends on the unique ability and accuracy of laser molding technology. In the past 15 months, Enovix has made use of the progress in laser power in the industry and the proprietary progress in electrode processing technology to prove several times the improvement in laser productivity in mass production. We are very happy to cooperate with global leading organizations such as IPG Photonics, and introduce experts from Manuel and other industries to further improve our capabilities in these fields. "

This signing of cooperation with IPG will help Enovix build and form its own growth model, and promote the transition of the entire industry from mechanical cutting to laser processing. The introduction of the next generation of laser processing equipment will help Enovix expand its scale.

It is reported that, as a leading manufacturer in the R&D and production of advanced silicon anode lithium ion batteries, Enovix's proprietary 3D battery structure increases energy density and maintains high cycle life. Enovix is building an advanced silicon anode lithium ion battery manufacturing plant in the United States for mass production. The company's initial goal was to provide high energy batteries for designers of industry-leading mobile devices, so that they could create more innovative and effective portable products. In addition, Enovix is also developing 3D battery technology and production processes for electric vehicles and energy storage markets to help the widespread use of renewable energy.

Trevor Ness, senior vice president of global sales and strategic business development of IPG Photonics, commented: "More and more battery manufacturers are applying laser technology to their manufacturing processes. We believe Enovix is the leader in this field, and we are happy to continue to cooperate with them and bring advanced laser solution innovation to the battery industry."

(2) Appoint Manuel Leonardo as Senior Laser Engineer

Enovix announced the appointment of Manuel Leonardo as the company's senior laser engineer and led its laser photonics project.

It is reported that Manuel Leonardo himself has a comprehensive knowledge of laser physics and has been working in the technical advisory committee of Enovix since April 2022. He has successfully brought laser products from concept to market, and has rich experience in designing cost-effective lasers. Before joining Enovix, Leonardo was the Vice President of Laser Systems under Vulcan Forms. Prior to that, he was the Engineering Director of IPG Silicon Valley Technology Center. From 2005 to 2013, he served as the co-founder and CTO of Mobius Photonics (later acquired by IPG Photonics).

Manuel Leonardo himself has a comprehensive knowledge of laser physics and obtained a bachelor's degree in physics from California State University. He is also a prolific inventor with 13 patents and 6 pending and temporary patents.
