Snapmaker has opened pre-orders for 20W and 40W laser modules, which are significant upgrades to the modules available on existing Snapmaker machines.

Snapmaker says that with the 40W module installed, you will be able to cut 15 mm basswood plywood at a time at a speed of 20 mm/SEC. With 20W, you will cut 10mm at a rate of 10mm/SEC. That's a lot more than Artisan and Snapmaker 2.0 - both are compatible with the new modules and have 1.6W and 10W modules, respectively. The only thing to note is that it doesn't have a camera like those found on 10W devices.

Power and speed are not the only focus here. Both modules have "smart" air assist features that help keep the laser lens clean and blow away smoke to prevent burning. Users can control this feature through Snapmaker's free and open source CAM software Luban. This will allow them to apply air assistance only to the cutting layer of the part being cut and sculpted, as well as access a range of laser material profiles.

In addition, the "focus stick" makes laser calibration easier, and the user can release this lever and manually move the tool head down until the lever touches the material. Snapmaker also has an autofocus setting on the machine that runs according to material thickness. Even better is the laser safety shield as well as orientation detection, which uses a gyroscope sensor to ensure the module is properly installed and kept in place.

Given that the new laser is compatible with Snapmaker's older machine, Snapmer 2.0, the manufacturer's dedication to modularity and ongoing support is notable. Snapmaker 2.0 is now more than four years old, which is a commendable support time from a consumer perspective. In addition to 2.0 and Snapmaker Artisan, these modules are also compatible with the Snapmaker Ray series, Ray laser engravers and cutters, and a variety of other modules for OEM machines.

Snapmaker's laser module is available for pre-order on the Snapmaker website, with discounted prices currently down to $499 for the 20W version and $899 for the 40W version. Anyone who buys Snapmaker 2.0 or Artisan before July 24 will get an extra 10% off. Depending on the item you ordered, the expected delivery time is between late October and late December.
