Welding shapes and Boolean operations all turn gray

When I try to combine text as shown, the Weld function works sometime and not others. I really don’t get it.

      For text, use the Weld button in the text dialog. See highlighted area in image. For Boolean to work, it needs to be converted to a path, then it is no longer editable text.

        With Welded selected when reducing the horizontal HSpace the text auto-welds and remains editable.
