I’m trying to engrave on a 32" Fireman’s Axe Handle that has a 3/4" dip (Approx 3.5" long) in the center of the Axe. After that 3-4" dip, it’s relatively flat. The customer wants 16" worth of words, but if I auto focus on the middle of the handle, it hits the wood and obviously moves the axe. Any suggestions. I’ve tried to defocus but didn’t care for the look. Maybe there is a different technique that I don’t know of.

Might require doing in multiple steps to compensate for this dip. Break the text into different chunks to match the height differences of the axe handle. If you show a picture of the actual handle, we all might have some other ideas. If movement of the material is the main concern, you can use a hold down of some sort. I have used hard fixtures through sand-bags to act as a nest or hold things in place while producing oddly shaped objects.
