Coherent High Laser (NYSE: COHR), a leader in high-power semiconductor lasers, recently announced the launch of a new generation of pumped laser diodes. The assembly has achieved an output power of 65 W and is primarily aimed at fiber lasers for industrial and consumer applications.

Hand-held fiber laser welding is accelerating to replace arc welding as a new technology choice. In this context, manufacturers have a strong desire for components that can improve the cost effectiveness of the design. Coherent's new laser diode delivers a reliable power output of 65 W, setting an industry record and achieving a 30% improvement over existing products while even further reducing operating current. These unique advantages, coupled with compatibility with existing substrates, enable the new diode to support a wide range of extremely low-cost fiber laser design architectures.

"To our knowledge, this is the industry's first commercially available pumped laser diode with an output power of 65 W, surpassing the 50 W diode we introduced at Opto-Western in January," said Dr. Karlheinz Gulden, senior vice president of Coherent Laser Components and Subsystems. Breaking records again. According to conventional thinking, these power levels often require the use of more expensive ceramic substrates. But our laser design has overcome this limitation because we have been able to reduce the operating current while increasing the output power. This combined record power output makes the new diode unique and irresistible to our customers."

The new 65W laser diode is based on our vertically integrated 6-inch gallium arsenide technology platform, whose reliability has been proven in the field for decades. To meet customer requirements, the new diode is available in 915 nm and 975 nm wavelength options when used as a bare or ceramic substrate package chip. The chip integrates Coherent's proprietary E2 mirror passivation technology to protect the laser from catastrophic damage, even at extremely high output power. The new diode will be available in fall 2023.

Coherent supplies customers with a wide range of fiber laser components, including seed lasers, ytterbium-doped double-clad fibers, acousto-optic modulators, fiber Bragg gratings, kilowatt-level pump/signal bunches, and IBS coated laser optics and high-power isolators micro-optics.
