According to Reuters, Google's parent company Alphabet and Indian telecommunications and internet provider Bharti Airtel are collaborating to deploy new laser internet technology in India.
This is a project called Taara, which is part of Alphabet Innovation Laboratory X and is also known as the 'Moonshot Factory'.
Taara is based on open standards used in conjunction with existing infrastructure, including radio and fiber optics, utilizing light as a very narrow, invisible beam of light to transmit information at ultra-high speeds in the air. The Taara team is using fast and easy to deploy devices to achieve 20 Gbps connectivity over distances of up to 20 kilometers. The team is collaborating with telecommunications companies, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and governments around the world to significantly accelerate the deployment of a wide range of high throughput networks needed to support the future of the network.
The Taara team is currently deploying their beam internet technology in India, Africa, and other parts of the world.
For the Taara project, the deployment with Bharti Airtel is the largest deployment in India so far, and several pilot projects have been carried out before, including villages in Andhra Pradesh, the center of Nairobi, and remote areas in Fiji and Tonga.
It is worth noting that in January last year, Google invested $700 million to acquire a 1.28% stake in Bharti Airtel. Nevertheless, the partnership between Taara and Bharti Airtel is separate from Google's investment. Mahesh Krishnaswamy, General Manager of X Project Taara
In the official blog article, Airtel will deploy the Taara link in its network in rural and urban areas in the coming months, striving to bring fast and affordable internet to more people. This launch is after Airtel has conducted a series of pilot projects and is also the largest deployment of Taara in India to date
