Recently, Booz Allen Hamilton, a digital system integrator and data-driven AI enterprise, announced the creation of a new business unit HELworks, which will focus on the development of directed energy (DE) and high-energy laser (HEL) weapon systems to "meet the needs of modern battlefield combatants".
The newly established HELworks is headquartered in Fredericksburg, Virginia, USA, which is the location of a design and development factory specializing in rapid prototyping and integration of high energy laser (HEL) systems. Another HELworks factory is located in Knoxville, Tennessee. There is a 15000 square foot laser weapon integration factory, and additional space is allocated for prototype design, development, testing, production and integration.
It is reported that based on the understanding of the needs and mission requirements of the US Department of Defense, Booz Allen has made a large amount of investment in independent R&D projects focusing on the development of targeted energy solutions in the past five years, and its internal human resources have gathered the experience of 60 different targeted energy projects in the past 35 years.
Susan Penfield, chief technology officer of Bosch Allen, said that HELworks was established mainly because Bosch Allen had more than 25 years of mature development experience in the combination of directed energy (DE) solutions. The company optimized these solutions based on dimensions, weight and power (SWaP) and delivered systems for operational testing and evaluation.
Bosch Allen said that many directional energy weapon systems have been too heavy, too large, and lack of power, making it difficult to deploy widely. HELworks will use the strong R&D investment of Booz Allen so far and the experience gained from the initial HEL prototype delivery to solve these continuous challenges. The goal of HELworks is to use a modular architecture, optimize size, weight and power (SWaP), and introduce directed energy (DE) capabilities into settings that meet national military needs.
