On October 19, at the 2022 annual meeting of the American Laser Society, Dr. Gu Bo, a well-known figure in the laser industry, won the Arthur L. Schawlow Award this year.
Dr. Gu Bo, who graduated from the Department of Optics and Meters of Zhejiang University (now the College of Optoelectronics) majoring in laser in his early years, is the first batch of graduate students studying in the laser field in the United States after the reform and opening up. Over the past 40 years, he has been working hard in this field. He has made extremely important contributions to the basic research of laser physics, the development of laser devices and laser materials, the design and development of laser systems, and the large-scale industrialization and commercialization of laser technology.
In his early years, Dr. Gu Bo was engaged in theoretical research on solid state lasers. He was the designer and manufacturer of the world's largest solid state laser for space satellites, and also the main developer of ultrafast laser crystal titanium doped sapphire. Since then, he has transferred from basic research to research and development of industrial laser technology, and introduced optical fiber laser technology to China 20 years ago, which has greatly promoted the development of domestic laser industry and greatly improved the level of Chinese laser technology in the field of laser terminal manufacturing.
Dr. Gu Bo has obtained 121 US and international patents in the field of laser and optics; He has published more than 170 papers, including 3 magazine cover articles; 13 collections of papers were edited and published; He made 24 keynote reports of international academic conferences and more than 87 invited reports. He has served as the chairman of 56 international academic conferences. He is the chairman of the Photonics West Laser Conference in the United States and the founding chairman of the Laser 3D Printing Conference. He is also the founding chairman of the China Laser Market Summit Forum and the secretary-general of Photonics Asia. He once served as the editorial board member of five international academic journals and the distinguished professors of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, University of Toronto, University of Waterloo, Zhejiang University of Technology and South China Normal University, and tutored several postdoctoral and doctoral students.
The Arthur L. Schawlow Award was established by the American Laser Society in 1982 to recognize scientists who have made outstanding contributions to basic research and industrial application of laser technology. It is one of the important awards in the laser field awarded by the American Laser Society. Arthur L. Schawlow, the inventor of laser, Robert Alfano, the pioneer of ultrafast laser, and Steven Chu, a Chinese American physicist, the winner of the Nobel Physics Prize in 1997 and the former Department of Energy of the United States, have all won this honor.
