On December 5, Abu Dhabi Institute of Technology Innovation (TII) in the United Arab Emirates announced that its Directed Energy Research Center (DERC) had achieved a major milestone in fiber laser technology.

It is reported that the Directed Energy Research Center (DERC) has built the first kilowatt class ytterbium doped fiber laser completely designed, assembled and tested in the United Arab Emirates. This laser is the first high-power fiber laser in the Middle East and North Africa region, which has verified the excellent operating performance of its proprietary state-of-the-art fiber laser development platform, and has confirmed the world-class skills and expertise of DERC researchers and engineers, and has successfully promoted the United Arab Emirates to become a key player in high-power laser sources.

Under the leadership of Dr. Giuseppe Sculria, the chief laser researcher, the project will focus on the following aspects:
- Establish a state-of-the-art optical laboratory for fiber laser development and fiber processing;
- Develop unique local capabilities in optical fiber forming and processing;
- Obtain industry best practices and latest theoretical progress of fiber laser technology;
- Establish a strong business relationship with world famous laser and photonics companies.

The international expert researchers and engineers who made this feat possible include Jawaher Al America, Taif Alhmoudi, Asma Al Ahmadi, Reem Al America and American Dubey.

High power fiber lasers have the advantages of high efficiency, high power, compactness and robustness, and can be widely used in material processing, national defense, telecommunications, medical and other applications. Due to the growing demand in high-tech fields such as national defense and aerospace, higher output power has become one of the key research directions of fiber laser development, which also makes it the best platform for further research and understanding of nonlinear optical phenomena.

For this breakthrough, Dr. Guillaume Matras, Senior Director of TII's Laser Photonics and Optoelectronics Department, said: "This success is a key turning point for the United Arab Emirates to move towards independent development of high-power laser technology. In addition, it also promotes the United Arab Emirates to become a leader in the field of fiber lasers, which will eventually open the door for more joint ventures and strategic cooperation with various stakeholders in the industry and academia. This achievement not only enhances TII's reputation as a key driver of innovative technologies in the region, but also strengthens TII's advocacy Efforts to guide Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates to become the world's leading high-energy and high-power research and development centers. "

About Scientific and Technological Innovation Institute (TII)
The Institute of Technological Innovation (TII) is a dedicated applied research pillar of the Abu Dhabi Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC). TII is a pioneering global R&D center, focusing on applied research and new era technology capabilities. All 10 specialized research centers of the research involve advanced materials, autonomous robots, cryptography, digital science, directed energy, quantum, security systems, propulsion and space, biotechnology, and renewable and sustainable energy. Through cooperation with outstanding talents, universities, research institutions and industry partners from all over the world, TII has connected the intellectual world and made contributions to building the R&D ecosystem, thus strengthening the status of Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates as global innovation centers.

About the Directed Energy Research Center (DERC)
The Directed Energy Research Center (DERC) of the Institute of Technology Innovation (TII) plays a leading role in understanding and using high-energy physics. The center is committed to innovation in electromagnetic, laser, plasma physics and other fields, including laser manufacturing, microwave photonics devices, free space optics and semiconductor development. The DERC facility is equipped with an ISO Grade 7 cleanroom of 77 square meters, including four scientific optical platforms with vibration isolation systems. The clean room is a temperature/humidity controlled environment, which can filter dust particles with a size of 0.5 μ m, ensuring high-precision results. In addition to the laser clean room, DERC also has a high-power laser laboratory for material resistance and laser industrial applications, which will strengthen the capacity of the laser laboratory.
