Ames Osram's New CoS Blue Laser Diode Helps Convergent Photonics Innovate Again
It is reported that Ames Osram, the world's leading optical solution supplier (stock code: AMS on the Swiss Stock Exchange), announced that the new laser module being developed by Convergent Photonics, the laser module manufacturer, will use the new 445 nm blue laser diode in the form of Ames Osram CoS (Chip on submit) package. Benefiting from this, these laser modules will be very suitable for high power industrial applications and medium power medical applications.
With the new blue laser diode of Ames Osram, Convergent Photonics, the manufacturer of laser modules, can install micro optical elements near the laser surface to achieve excellent control of beam shape and size.
Convergent Photonics uses CoS packaged products to improve the optical power of laser modules in welding equipment and advanced surgical instruments, and reduce module size.
The blue laser diode of Ames Osram adopts CoS packaging, which provides more small size options besides the common TO can packaging.
Convergent Photonics (headquartered in Turin, Italy) currently uses the CoS packaged blue laser diode of Ames Osram to produce a new, efficient and compact multi emitter laser module, which is equipped with a micro optical lens emitting within the 445nm visible light wavelength range.
In addition to the common TO can packaging, CoS packaging provides a wider range of small size choices. Multiple CoS lasers can be combined in one module to save space. Therefore, the micro optical lens is installed near the laser facet to enable a single laser to be coupled to the fiber, so as to control the beam shape and size more accurately.
This compact modular design achieves better heat conduction management than the laser system based on the TO can package. The optical power output of Convergent Photonics industrial multi emitter module coupled with 100 µ m optical fiber is up to 100W, which can be combined to further improve power and provide a very compact solution for welding equipment.
Using OSRAM's blue CoS laser diode, Convergent Photonics can produce compact 100W laser modules, including electronic devices (as shown in the figure).
In the field of medical application, the same technology can be used to integrate multiple blue CoS lasers of Ames Osram with control electronic devices to form a very compact independent light source. In addition, Convergent Photonics combines it with the second laser with different wavelengths coupled to the transmission fiber to build a series of hybrid multi wavelength light sources, which are packaged in small modules and can be used for advanced surgical equipment.
Robert Paoletti, Director of Diode Production of Convergent Photonics, pointed out that:
The packaging method of traditional blue laser diode limits the scope of incorporating blue light into compact and efficient laser module combination. With the CoS packaged blue laser developed by Ames Osram, we can now realize an expandable building block that can support high-power applications with very compact components.
Now, we can add blue laser emission to the module, whose size, weight and power characteristics match the excellent performance of our existing products in the visible and infrared parts of the spectrum.
There are two versions of blue laser in CoS package provided by Ames Osram, with output power of 5W, respectively 1.0mm × 1.3mm × 0.2mm PLPCOS 450D, and 4.0mm × 3.0mm × 0.3mm PLPCOS 450E, which is installed on a direct copper coating (DBC) substrate with high thermal efficiency.
Ames Osram blue laser diodes in the form of PLPCOS 450D and PLPCOS 450ECoS packages have been mass produced and are available worldwide. They can be ordered directly or through any authorized dealer.
Ames Osram also provides blue laser diode packaged with TO90, with 5W and 1.6W optical power output.
