Recently, globally renowned optical component manufacturer Edmund Optics announced that the company has acquired ultrasonic assisted systems and high-precision optical manufacturer son-x.

Edmund Optics, as a leader in optical technology solutions, has been serving various fields such as life sciences, biomedicine, industrial testing, semiconductors, and laser processing since its establishment in 1942. The company has over 1250 employees in 18 regions worldwide and is still expanding.

It is reported that Edmund Optics' global manufacturing base produces over 2 million optical components annually, with 170000 assembled. Its products cover various precision optical components, imaging systems, and optomechanical equipment, with the ability to mass produce standard and customized products. There are currently over 34000 unique optical components in stock.

Son-x is a subsidiary incubated by the Fraunhofer Institute, founded in 2011 and headquartered in Aachen, Germany. It focuses on the field of ultra precision manufacturing and its main products include metal mirrors used in semiconductor, satellite, and defense industries.

Son-x has the most advanced production facilities, equipped with ultra precision machines, optical measurement technology, and clean room environment. The company can provide production of infrared optical components, ranging in quantity from one-time production of prototypes to mass production of thousands of products per year.

This acquisition further enhances Edmund Optics' diamond turning capabilities. By integrating son-x's expertise and resources, Edmund Optics has developed groundbreaking ultrasonic assisted diamond turning technology and redefined global precision optical production, now able to provide multi axis machining (up to 5 axes) of highly complex surfaces ranging from 1 millimeter to 1 meter.

Marisa Edmund, CEO and Chairman of the Board, believes that this acquisition is a great collaboration that fully aligns with our mission to become a provider of high-precision solutions in the fields of optics and photonics. Together, we will achieve greater success for our customers and stakeholders.

Dr. Olaf Dambon, co-founder and Managing Director of son-x, also shares the same sentiment. He believes that joining Edmund Optics marks the beginning of a new strategic chapter for son-x. By combining our high-precision diamond turning capabilities with Edmund Optics' global influence and investment plans, we can accelerate innovation and provide higher precision and value to customers worldwide.
