Imas Osram, a global leader in optical solutions, has added higher performance infrared lasers targeted at cost-conscious consumers and other applications by introducing a 75 W edgewise emission laser in a cost-effective radial plastic package. The SPL PL90AT03's peak output power and narrow aperture of 110 µm give it excellent performance in long-distance ranging applications and easier optical integration.
The low-cost plastic packaging of the new SPL PL90AT03 edge-emitting laser diode is ideal for high-volume applications. The SPL PL90AT03 has the same size as the previous generation of SPL PL90 series laser diodes, and with its state-of-the-art chip technology, the SPL PL90AT03 can be easily upgraded to higher efficiency. The SPL PL90AT03 also produces a narrower emission width and makes optical design easier, as the aperture of the device is 50% smaller than its predecessor.
Using ams OSRAM multi-junction technology, the single-channel SPL PL90AT03 consists of three vertically stacked emitters in a single laser chip housed in a radial plastic package. This technique enables the laser to produce A peak output power of 30 ns pulsed light of 75 W when the maximum forward current of the device is 25 A. Laser diodes can produce short laser pulses ranging from a few ns to 100 ns.
The high-light power output of the narrow transmission area makes the SPL PL90AT03 ideal for range-ranging and range-measuring applications that operate over long distances, such as robotics, unmanned aerial vehicles, and home and factory automation devices. In time-of-flight sensing and LiDAR applications, the high performance of the SPL PL90AT03 enables the generation of more precise and accurate depth maps for 3D optical sensing and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) systems.
Jouni Riihimaeki, product marketing manager for Industrial Lasers at ams OSRAM, said, "The growing ams OSRAM portfolio of high-performance edge-fired IR lasers now offers a new option for customers who require low-cost packaging. The SPL PL90AT03 has the narrow aperture and high output power of the other edge-emitting lasers in the series, but is packaged in radial plastic, ideal for high-volume applications.
Highlighter properties
The pulsed laser SPL PL90AT03 has a peak wavelength of 905 nm and a spectral bandwidth of 5 nm (FWHM). With a beam divergence Angle of only 12° (parallel) x 25° (vertical), efficient beam shaping can be achieved through its small aperture of 110 µm.
